The Challenge
There are few things that can make your heart sink faster than a building covered in graffiti. You also invariably find that as soon as you have been hit once, it attracts other ‘artists’ to the building and all of a sudden it is completely covered in indiscriminate scribbles.
It isn’t nice to look at for anybody, but when it is your building that has fallen victim to these attacks, then you need to take action. Graffiti will ruin the aesthetics of your property, and it can damage the market value of homes and a business’ reputation. It looks scruffy, unkept and unloved – not the sort of image that you want to portray.
This was the situation that a warehouse owner in Edenbridge, Sevenoaks found themselves in recently. Their external walls, shutter doors, cladding and even the windows had been targeted by vandals, leaving the entire building looking tired, and quite frankly unprofessional. As you can see from the pictures, the damage was extensive.
They knew that they needed to act. They wanted to bring the freshness back to the building – a renewed sense of vivacity. For that they would need a professional cleaning company to come in and get the job done, with minimal disruption to their day-to-day business.
They called Ideal Response. We were soon on our way to complete the graffiti removal in Sevenoaks.
The Ideal Solution
When we arrived on site the scale of the problem was immediately apparent. Not only was the building covered in graffiti, but most of it had been there for a while – the best time to clear graffiti is to begin the treatment within the first 48 hours. Unfortunately a lot of this graffiti had become embedded into the brickwork, making the graffiti removal in Sevenoaks more challenging.
The next challenge came in the form of the layout of the property. There were some very tight gaps that we would have to get our equipment down in order to tackle the graffiti effectively. We would have to slightly modify our working practices and come up with solutions to work around this.
Then, there was the staff in the warehouse. They were there to do a job, and a big part of our job was to not disrupt that. We worked closely with the management there to ensure that we kept out of their way whenever possible, including ensuring that our equipment didn’t present trip hazards.
Onto the graffiti removal itself: we began by applying a 2-3mm coat of paint softener, which worked to break down the paint. This was left overnight to get to work. Then, the real business started as we deployed our DOFF system.
This is a steam-based stone cleaning system that is unlike any other steam system in the world. It can reach temperatures of up to 150°C at the nozzle end which can, along with the pressure, be varied by the operator depending on the conditions. The combination of high temperatures and high pressure delivers a gentle, but highly effective clean. Crucially, the surface is not saturated with water, so it has a very quick drying time.
Our DOFF system was used all over the affected areas, as we carefully negotiated the layout of the property and the working staff.
The Result
For jobs like this, I feel that it is better to let the pictures do the talking. As you will see from the before and after photos, not a trace of the graffiti was left on the property, as it was restored to its former appearance – all with minimal disruption to the work in the warehouse.
