WARD DECONTAMINATION
Multi-stage Covid-19 decontamination keeps NHS ward safe
Speedy COVID-19 service helps to meet refurbishment deadline.
SUMMARY
Client: Medway Maritime Hospital (on behalf of Bauvill Construction)
• Decontamination required after confirmed Covid-19 case
• Speed essential due to imminent refurbishment
• Decontamination result below ten Relative Light Units (RLUs)
• Treatment will reduce the spread of viruses/bacteria
THE CHALLENGE
Preventing the spread of Covid-19 in NHS hospitals is a challenge, especially when wards require refurbishment, and must be operational again as soon as possible.
That was the situation for our client, Bauvill, a leading construction and maintenance company which provides building and refurbishment support for clients such as the NHS, British Land and Maidstone and Medway Councils.
Bauvill Managing Director, Damien South, contacted the Ideal Response team with the challenge of providing professional covid-19 decontamination for a 28-bed ward which is part of a mix of open wards in Medway Maritime Hospital. Response had to be fast – and cross contamination had to be eliminated.
THE IDEAL SOLUTION
The Ideal Response team immediately surveyed the site, and confirmation was sent for next day attendance for decontamination.
Patients in the 28-bed Arethusa Ward were moved to other wards in the hospital, along with beds and equipment. It was decided that all wards should be decontaminated, rather than an individual area, to ensure that no cross contamination had occurred.
As is normal for current Covid-19 decontamination projects, the Ideal Response team assessed the cleanliness of tested surfaces as an accurate basis for eliminating or minimising contamination using effective cleaning procedures.
The team then completed the disinfection using electrostatic backpack sprayers, which deliver a precise application to help reduce the spread of viruses/bacteria. As part of the multistage Covid-19 cleaning in Kent decontamination, all wards were decontaminated, together with toilets, a sluice room, medical stores, a staff room, a nursing station and all floors.
British Disaster Management Association trained technicians using specialist electrostatic backpack sprayers.
BEFORE AND AFTER RESULTS
Prior to disinfection, our on-site testing showed failures on surface and equipment, with levels of over 1,300 Relative Light Units within the Arethusa Ward, and over 600 RLUs in other areas. Following the decontamination of the ward areas, the Ideal Response team re-tested the areas and all were below 10 RLU’s, making the area safe to complete the refurbishment. The areas were signed off by Bauvill’s Site Manager Jim Totten, hazardous waste was removed from site, and a decontamination certificate was issued.
After decontamination, the result of under 10 RLUs meant all areas were safe for refurbishment to begin.
“The quick response of Ideal meant we began our 4-week refurbishment programme on-time, and could work safely without the risk of Covid-19 contamination.”
Damien South, Managing Director, Bauvill Limited
ABOUT THE CLEANING TECHNOLOGY
To assess the cleanliness of tested surfaces in the ward, Ideal Response experts used Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) monitoring – a common method for measuring the presence of contamination, including allergens and bacteria. ATP is an enzyme present in all organic material, and when found on a surface it’s an indication of improper cleaning and/or the presence of contamination.
We use hygiene luminometers (in conjunction with ATP swabs) to take bioluminescence measurements in Relative Light Units (RLUs). This allows us to rapidly assess the level of cleanliness of environmental surfaces in healthcare and other settings. Our goal is always to reduce RLUs to below 150-200 – and we look to reduce levels below 50 RLUs, as was achieved in Medway Maritime Hospital with a result of under 10 RLUs.
*Our teams uses the best methodologies and the latest technology to reduce RLUs
